What Makes a Golf Cart Street Legal in Florida?

If you want to take your golf cart on public roads, Florida law has specific requirements you need to meet first and having the right street legal golf cart coverage matters too.

What Does Street Legal Mean for Golf Carts in Florida?

Florida law distinguishes between a standard golf cart and a low-speed vehicle (LSV). A standard golf cart is limited to speeds under 20 mph and may be operated on certain locally designated public roads. To operate on a broader range of public roads, your golf cart must be converted and registered as an LSV, which requires meeting state equipment requirements, including:

  • Headlights, taillights, and brake lights
  • Turn signals
  • Reflectors and mirrors
  • A windshield
  • A parking brake
  • Seat belts for each passenger
  • A vehicle identification number (VIN) and registration

Once properly equipped and registered as an LSV, your cart may legally travel on roads posted at 35 mph or under.

Where Can You Drive a Street Legal Golf Cart?

In Venice and Venice, FL, many neighborhoods and designated corridors allow street legal golf carts. Florida law requires that drivers under 18 have a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license to operate a golf cart on public roads, and drivers 18 and older must carry a valid government-issued photo ID. LSV operators must have a valid driver’s license. Local ordinances may add restrictions beyond state law, so check with your municipality before you head out.

How to Get Insurance for Your Street Legal Golf Cart

Insurance requirements depend on how your cart is classified. If your cart is registered as an LSV, Florida law requires state-required minimums in personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage liability (PDL) coverage, the same minimums required for standard motor vehicles.

A golf cart or LSV insurance policy may include liability protection, coverage for physical damage, and protection for passengers, though coverage details vary by policy.
