Golf Cart vs. Low-Speed Vehicle: What’s the Difference and Why It Changes Your Insurance
If you live in Florida, you’ve probably seen golf carts and low-speed vehicles (LSVs) cruising through neighborhoods, retirement communities and even city streets. While these vehicles may look similar, the differences between them can have a big impact on your insurance needs. At Ramey Insurance Agency, we can help you understand how Florida law treats each type of vehicle and what that means for your coverage.
What’s the Difference Between a Golf Cart and a Low-Speed Vehicle?
Golf carts and LSVs are both popular for short trips, but they’re not the same under Florida law:
Golf Carts:
- Designed for use on golf courses or within private communities.
- Typically have a top speed of less than 20 mph.
- Not required to be registered or titled for use on public roads (with some exceptions for designated areas).
Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs):
- Look like golf carts but are built to go faster.
- Must be equipped with safety features like seat belts, headlights, turn signals and mirrors.
- Required to be registered, titled and insured like a regular motor vehicle if operated on public roads.
How Do These Differences Affect Your Insurance?
The way Florida law classifies your vehicle determines your insurance requirements.
Florida law does not require insurance for golf carts used only on private property. However, adding golf cart coverage to your homeowners policy or purchasing a separate policy can help cover you against liability or damage.
LSVs must carry minimum liability insurance, just like cars, and you’ll need to provide proof of insurance to register your LSV for street use. LSV insurance can cover liability, collision, comprehensive and medical payments.
Why Does It Matter?
The right insurance covers you, your passengers and your investment. If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is a golf cart or an LSV, or if you’re considering an upgrade, our team can help you review your options and find the right coverage.
