What Is Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury?

Among the many coverages available under a full coverage auto insurance policy, uninsured motorist is perhaps one of the most important—especially in Florida. This insurance provides compensation for damages and injuries that may occur in an accident involving another driver who is not carrying insurance.

What Is An Uninsured Driver?

An uninsured driver is someone who is not carrying the legally required amount of auto insurance. In Florida, all drivers must carry at least:

  • $10,000 in bodily injury liability per person
  • $20,000 in bodily injury liability per accident
  • $10,000 in property damage liability
  • $10,000 in personal injury protection

If a driver fails to carry this amount, they may not be able to provide compensation for injuries or damages they may cause while operating their vehicle.

For example, say a car hits yours after running a red light. In most states, you would file a claim with the other driver’s insurer to receive compensation. This isn’t possible if the driver is not carrying insurance, however. This is where your uninsured motorist insurance steps in.

Uninsured motorist bodily injury specifically covers bodily injury you and your passengers may suffer after an accident involving an uninsured motorist. It can cover medical bills such as emergency services, procedures, surgery or hospital bills. In some cases, it can also cover wage replacement in the event the other driver is unable to work after an injury sustained in such an accident.

Is Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury Liability Required?

In most states, uninsured motorist coverage is not legally required. Florida is no different, as the state only requires basic liability and personal injury protection in order for drivers to operate legally. This doesn’t mean that you should go without uninsured motorist coverage, however.

Even without a requirement, uninsured motorist insurance is crucial, especially in states such as Florida where there is a high rate of uninsured drivers. This insurance can save you money and hassle if you are ever involved in an accident with someone who is not carrying the proper amount of insurance. Uninsured motorist bodily injury is especially useful, as it can cover expensive medical bills in case of an accident with an uninsured driver.

Be sure to speak with your insurance agent about the amount of insurance that is right for your vehicle and your needs. If you are ever involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, be sure to contact your insurance agent as soon as possible.
