What Coverage Is Typically Included in Standard Motorcycle Insurance?

While your motorcycle can be an exciting and fun way of traveling, you must also take precautions before taking it out for a ride. Like any other motor vehicle, motorcycles include significant risks and exposures, and even the most experienced riders may be unable to avoid every incident. That’s why, as a responsible motorcyclist, you should acquire adequate insurance. These policies are integral to any rider’s insurance portfolio and may provide critical financial assistance following an accident on the road or other incident involving your bike.  man siting on motorcycle at night

What Does Motorcycle Insurance Cover?

Motorcycle insurance is similar to standard auto insurance you might purchase for your car. Although your policy can be personalized in many ways to suit your specific needs, circumstances and budget, adequate coverage should generally include some combination of the following coverages:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage—This coverage is legally required for most riders and can help pay for the losses of other motorists or pedestrians who might be injured in accidents for which you are responsible.
  • Property damage liability coverage—If you are responsible for damaging another party’s property, such as another person’s vehicle or structure, your insurance can help pay for repair or replacement costs. This coverage is also usually required by law.
  • Collision coverage—This coverage provides financial assistance if your bike is damaged in a collision with another vehicle or stationary object, such as a building, signpost or fence.
  • Comprehensive coverage—This coverage can compensate you for losses involving your motorcycle caused by incidents not included in collision coverage, such as fires, severe weather and criminal activity (e.g., theft, vandalism).
  • Personal injury protection—If you or your passengers are injured in an accident, this coverage, also known as PIP, can help pay for medical bills, lost income and other resulting damages.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage—By including this in your insurance, your policy can help you recoup your losses if another party is at fault but lacks sufficient coverage.

Take time to consider additional endorsements or riders for your motorcycle insurance policy. For example, you may wish to purchase coverage for your riding gear or any custom parts that have been installed on your bike.
